Headaches

Headaches in children are a common health problem and can occur for many different reasons. Causes of headaches can include infections, eye strain, stress, fatigue, health problems such as sinusitis or more serious conditions. When assessing headaches in children, it is important to consider the type, frequency, severity and other accompanying symptoms.

Types of Headache in Children

  • Tension Headaches: It is the most common type of headache in children. It is usually described as a feeling of pressure or squeezing on both sides and is often associated with stress, fatigue or eye strain.
  • Migraine Migraine headaches, which can also be seen in children, are usually one-sided, throbbing and moderate to severe. Migraines can be accompanied by sensitivity to light and sound, nausea and vomiting. Some children may experience symptoms called aura, such as visual disturbances before the headache.
  • Cluster Headaches: Less common in children, this type of headache is characterized by severe pain behind the eye and usually occurs in a series of “clusters”.
  • Sinusitis Headaches: It develops due to sinus infections and is usually characterized by a feeling of pressure around the forehead, cheeks and nose.

Other Causes of Headache

  • Infectious diseases (such as influenza or meningitis)
  • Eye strain or visual disturbances
  • Dehydration
  • Lack of sleep
  • Diet and nutritional factors (e.g., not drinking enough water or sensitivity to certain foods)
  • Psychological factors (stress, anxiety)

Diagnosis and Treatment

It is important to take a detailed medical history and perform a physical examination to correctly identify the cause of headache in children. Depending on the condition, additional tests such as vision tests, blood tests or brain imaging tests (MRI or CT scan) may be required.

Treatment varies depending on the underlying causes of the headache and may include

  • Adequate hydration and regular nutrition
  • Regular sleep patterns
  • Stress management techniques
  • Painkillers if necessary (on doctor’s advice)
  • Special medicines for migraine
  • Correction of visual impairments

Although headaches in children are not usually a sign of a serious health problem, it is important to consult a health professional if headaches recur frequently, are severe or come with other worrying symptoms. This enables early diagnosis and treatment of any underlying health problems.
