Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy in children is a group of permanent movement and posture disorders caused by a condition that damages the brain before, during or early after birth.

Cerebral Palsy

This condition is caused by brain damage that affects the development of motor functions and can have lasting effects on children’s muscle control, coordination, tonus and posture. Cerebral palsy is one of the most common types of motor disability in childhood.

Causes

Cerebral palsy can have several different causes, including

  • Prenatal Damage: Infections, nutritional deficiencies, genetic factors or exposure to toxins that the mother suffered during pregnancy.
  • Complications during labor: Lack of oxygen (hypoxia) or trauma during labor.
  • Postnatal Injury: Infections (such as meningitis), head trauma or other conditions that affect the brain.

Symptoms

Symptoms of cerebral palsy vary from child to child and may include the following:

  • Abnormalities in muscle tone (such as hypertonia or hypotonia)
  • Involuntary movements or convulsions
  • Coordination and balance problems
  • Developmental delays (such as sitting, crawling or walking)
  • Speech difficulties
  • Learning difficulties
  • Epilepsy

Diagnosis

Cerebral palsy is usually diagnosed through an assessment of the child’s developmental history, a physical examination and various medical tests (such as an MRI or CT scan). These tests can help determine the location and extent of damage to the brain.

Treatment

The treatment of cerebral palsy depends on the severity of the symptoms and the needs of the child. Treatment often requires a multidisciplinary approach and may include the following:

  • Physiotherapy: To improve muscle tone, expand range of motion and improve motor skills.
  • Occupational therapy: To improve daily living skills and increase the child’s independence.
  • Speech and Language Therapy: To work on speech and swallowing difficulties.
  • Orthotics Assistive devices used to support posture and movement.
  • Medication Therapy: To control muscle spasms and manage other associated conditions (for example, epilepsy).

Improving Quality of Life

Providing support and resources for children with cerebral palsy and their families can help children reach their potential and improve their quality of life. Education, social services and support groups can guide families and children through this process. With appropriate support and treatment, children with cerebral palsy can make progress in many areas and lead fulfilling lives.
